something I read recently).

Right, it's supposed to be hot, not just warm. It's still the same way for new cars actually.


I remember one episode when I was a mechanic's apprentice and I was sent on the Autobahn with a (then new) Audi V8 that had transmission work done to get it hot enough for a reliable ATF level reading. It was a really nice drive :) The most fascinating thing was how fast I was when I finally saw - out of the corner of my eye - the tach needle drop as it went into fourth...
