It's not likely to be the synchros. Those play no part once you're engaged in a
gear.

The gear engagement teeth have a slight undercut. Once the gear is engaged, this helps hold it in gear. In my many years of rebuilding VW tranaxles, the usual cause is that the shift fork is worn, and the slider is not engaging all the way. This wears the gear on the shaft, and then it starts poppingt out of gear. I can look at the shfit fork wear in a VW trans and just about tell you the drivers habits. If 1st gear goes, the driver rests his/her hand on the shift lever at stop lights. If 3rd/4th goes first, the driver rests their hand on the shift lever going down the road. The Trans is designed and adjusted so that after it is in gear, leave the shifter alone. This is why the automatic stickshift in the T-1 had little problems with the internal components. You can't ride with your hand on the shifter, as that will disengage the clutch.
