It sounds like you've got it pretty much narrowed down.

I'd try grounding one end of a SP wire and seeing if the that lets the spark 
thru. If that doesn't work, ground one of the cylinder output towers on the 
dist cap, and then check again for current in the main HV wire.

For some reason, spark is not getting thru. The fact that it gets thru just the 
coil wire makes it clear that everything else is working.

Somehow, I'm wondering if you have a beetle cap on there, with a type 3 rotor. 
Do some measurements to the top of the rotor and up inside the cap. Does it 
look like the rotor is tall enough to reach that carbon brush? If you have a 
beetle cap, then the rotor will be maybe 1/2" short of reaching where it has to 
go.

When you've been swapping distributors, have you been keeping the same cap?
