There are only a very few things you need to get a spark:

Power to the coil, a good coil, points that make and break, and a condensor
that's fairly close to working.

Does the timing light flash when you open the points by hand? If so, then the
coil & condensor are good.

Does the voltage on the dist side of the coil go up and down as you crank the
engine over with the starter? If so, then the points and distributor are good.

Check the inside of the dist cap. Is there a spring loaded carbon button
sticking down in the center? If not, you can get one from another cap, or buy a
new cap.

Do you have the right cap? A beetle cap is too tall and the rotor won't reach
up high enough to reach the contacts.

Only buy Bosch caps & rotors, the rest are unreliable.
