You can identify wheels with type 3 offset with only a straightedge, about 18" long. Remove the hubcap and place the straightedge against the circular rim around the lug bolts. Then slide the straightedge outwards until the end hits the rim. On type 3 wheels, the straightedge will intersect the rim in the region where the wheel weights would sit.
