As far as I know, this is factory.  My '67 Squareback (very original) also 
had that pipe.  My '63 has a 90-degree bend in the pipe because the intake 
line runs up the case center line.  "Get it going in the right direction" as 
you said. 

Hoover's idea of a lamp fitting is better as the pipe rubs on the rubber 
bushing, eventually wearing it out.  Then the pipe wears through and starts 
leaking.  Not really a problem except for people who don't know to check it. 

Similar pipe/bushing combinations were used on all models.
