The Square I'm driving right now is an automatic, 1971. Very smooth shifting, and I'm really getting to like it, myself being a manual transmission guy my whole life. These transmissions (Borg/Warner 003) were used in later VW watercooled cars I believe (Rabbits?) and according to the local parts guy, you can get just about anything you need (except for external stuff like the damn FRONT MOUNTS -- you'll probably have to get those from people on the list if it wears out).
