As the distributor shaft turns, the points are open for awhile and then closed
for awhile. Dwell is the amount of time, expressed in distributor shaft
degrees, during which the points are closed.

On our engines the dwell should be 45-55 degrees.

This can be measured with a dwell meter, or roughly with a feeler gauge to set
the points gap. The dwell meter is more accurate, but the feeler gauge is
usually adequate.
