6 ply means 6 plys of cord in the sidewall of the tire, which is a very
stiff riding tire. 6 ply rated were actually only 4 plys of cord but
with a strength rating of a 6 ply. This was a much softer riding tire.
You wouldn't want to ride in a Squareback with 6 ply tires.
