In both cases it was a diaphram which pushed on a plunger.

The German ones had a metal plunger made in 3 parts, including a spring, so
that it would contact and maintain force on the contact while letting the
diaphram go all the way to the end of it's travel.

The Brazilian one had a solid nylon plunger which melted on the end when the
contacts got hot.

I think both of mine failed when silicone managed to seep around the diaphram
and contaminate the contacts until they would no longer conduct.
