You will get a bunch of replies that assure you that this will destroy the AT, 
but I see no reason why this would happen. The AT case, just like the MT case 
is vented, so you really can't build up pressure in there, which is what most 
people will tell you will happen. If the fluid gets WAY high, then you'll start 
to dissipate energy in churning the ATF around, but I don't think this will 
happen if the level is at all close.

Remember that checking the ATF level must be done with the engine running. The 
level will be lower then, because all the AT passageways will be filled with 
ATF. When you shut the engine off, the ATF all drains into the sump and the 
level rises.
