Re: [T3] Parts questions: Dave and Matt's notch

<x-flowed>> >We might need to buy transmission shift rod - any suggestions on a
source. Our seems to have a small bend in it.

Don't try to straighten it! They're *supposed* to have a slight bend. Hold it up to the side of the tunnel,
the bend should be at about the rear of the E-brake handle.

This is from www.chirco.com with regards to a beetle transmission:

Shift Lever:
Make sure you obtain the correct replacement part if you're replacing the shift lever. On vehicles produced before August 1967, the lever is straight; it's curved on later models. Don't try to swap levers from one model to another unless they're identical. The lever on 1973 and later models is about 1-1/2 inches shorter than those on earlier models.

Shift Rod:
Look over the shift rod for distortion. Replace it if it's warped or damaged (a bent shift rod can cause hard shifting and/or the loss of first and third gear).

No sounds. Got my Gen & Oil lights on but nothing
after that. The car had been parked all day. I have
started it up at least a dozen time since then with no
trouble. As far as the bad/dirty solenoid is
concerned, is it just the connections? With the Muir
suggestions - like tapping the solenoid with a hammer
- what does that do?

Thanks again for your help.

Do you guys have a list of things you never travel without? Spare parts that
are hard to find on the road but don't' take up too much room, and are easy
to replace on the side of the road...

I just realized last time I was lubing the front end-I am missing the lock
nut for the upper torsion bar. I remember tightening it last year with
Greg's help, and the lock nut broke or something, and I forgot to get a new
one...are these easy to get? Any suggestions...

Gates part # is 7395 -- anyplace that still employs actual parts people can
cross-reference that to their brand.

Probably just "sticktion". Spray a bit of penetrant on there, see if you can get it to twist.

Probably just corroded. BE careful with this cable as you have a rare
part in your hand. They are no longer available.

What year?? 5 bolt, or 4 bolt. 4 bolt lugs are 14 x 1.5mm. 87-94 ft lbs
torque. 5 bolts are 12 x 1.5mm 72 ft lbs torque.

Sounds like an ignition switch problem or a starter problem. If shorting it at
the solenoid terminals did the trick then I'd suspect the ignition switch.

The solenoid depends on a good connection thru the starter to work. If the
starter brushes are not making good contact, the solenoid won't work. Sometimes
the brushes get hung up a bit and tapping on the side of the starter will jog
them a little, allowing for better contact.

Yes, I think these are still available. If you can't find them, I can rebuild
it for you. The tandem MC is a worthwhile upgrade.

I have several good used ones.

It is just tight and corroded. Once the cable is out you can tap them loose
with a hammer. Save any washers that are on there; you may need them.

> The wheel nuts are 12 mm. Does anyone know the thread pitch?

4-bolt lug bolts are M14 x 1.5. I don't have any 5-bolt parts here.

I measured a pair of tie rods I had removed from a car I parted out. They
haven't been adjusted since they were on the road. Here's what I get for a LHD
type 3; measurements are ball center to ball center, approx:

left 14-5/8"
right 31"

> Also when I installed the fan it didn't seem to push in all the way
> will this be taken care of when I tighten the crank pully gland nut?

It should go all the way in on its own. If not, I'd be worried that the
Woodruff key was tilted and this won't always correct itself. Pull the fan out
and take a look at the key. If it's not in there correctly, it can be very hard
to correct once the case halves are back together.

> and finally what goes inside the large hole on the oil breather? mine
> had some steel wool and a spring?

What year?

Up thru '69 there was a washer and a plastic curly "sponge" in there. From
about '70 there was a washer and a spring.

I don't think VW ever supplied steel wool. If it's the fine stuff I'd be
worried that it would break up and shed bits of steel down into the sump. If
it's the coarse stuff like you'd use on a skillet then it might be fine,
especially if it's the stainless steel "Kurly Kate" kind of scrubber. It's just
there to coalese oil droplets so they can drain back into the sump, but there's
often condensed water there, so iron might rust and cause problems.

VW never supplied the spring together with the sponge.

All 12V, and most 6V, type 3s use 9.5 x 1000La belts. Beetle belts are a bit
too long for us.
