Re: type3-d Digest V2004 #493

<x-flowed>I just purchased a '68 Fastback. I need the license plate light assembly. Does anyone know if I can use one from a '70 Square?

Neither, until you are sure what is wrong. The first thing I would
sugest is to get a Bentley Manual, so you have a wiring diagram that you
can trust. If you just bought the car, chances are there is some screwed
up wiring.

Started a month or so ago.

Does you steering wheel sit level when you are driving straight?

Yes.

Is that serpentine spring in place on the TS switch?

Yes.

Upon further investigation it seems to only happen wiht right turns.
On left turns in auto cancels fine.

There is no fuel pressure sensor. The fuel pressure regulator is the same for all type 3s except for the few 72-3s with EGR. I can get you the part # tonight if you need it. I have good used ones here. They almost never fail.

I should add that there IS a pressure sensor, but it is not a FUEL pressure sensor. It is actually a manifold pressure (or vacuum) sensor.

I was in the junk yards down in Otay today and saw 5 type 4's total in the two Ecologys and Beetlemania. People talk about putting T4 engnes in T3's. I don't see how they would fit but if anyone in San Diego wan'ts to do it. Now is a good time for parts.

Today I discovered one thing that sucks about junk yards that I never
thought about previously, Bees. My trip odometer is broken and I saw
one but the car had a yellow jacket nest on each door. So the speedo
is still there.

Remember that I can fix your odometer. I charge more, but the junkyard odo may also be broken.

I also promise not to include bees in your return package. ;-)

You really need to get in there with some kind of meter and figure out what the problem really is. Troubleshooting by just replacing possible suspects is the longest, most expensive way to go, and you learn absolutely nothing about your car this way.

Start with the fuses and then check the side plate on the switch for looseness.

Does it work when you push the nub both up and down? Does the tab on the back of the steering wheel look okay?

Maybe the TS swttch guts just needs some fresh grease in there. Perhaps a drop of oil worked in with the old grease would help.

I'd work on the L/R difference and try to figure out why it works one way and not the other.

Let me give you a little background. This '71
Fasty has 79K original unmolested miles on it. The
vehicle has the original spare tire, original
interior, original engine. As far as I can tell the
following are also original: Brakes, Clutch, Coil,
etc. The only things that have been changed are: Tires, Generator belt, distributor cap, most rubber
for doors, front and rear glass, etc. This car is
"the bomb"! Everything works, including the buzzer if
you leave your keys in the ignition. I am the 4th
owner. The last 3 (including myself) have been since
1999. The original owner bought the car in Knoxville,
TN and had all the work done at the dealership. I
have the original bill of sale and all the stamped
records from the dealership. The second owner popped
out all the glass, chrome, etc. had the car repainted.
Then he showed the car. The 3rd owner bought the car
2 years ago at a show for his wife, she drove one in
high school. When he brought it home for her, she
said, "that nice dear" and never drove the car. He
drove the car about 200 miles in two years, it just
sat in his garage. This 3rd owner had a '63 Corvette
restored for him. When the Vette was done, he needed
the space in the garage, so he sold the Fasty. It was
just dumb luck that I found the vehicle. (The reason I
am telling you all this is so when I ask questions in
the future you know that I am dealing with a stock
car). The Fasty is a 2 on the standard scale and with
a little work could be a 1. However, that is not my
intention. I just think its a lot of fun to drive!
I have a little experience working on vehicles
from my youth. That was mostly muscle cars and a '80
Datsun. I did all the work replacing brakes, exhaust,
clutches etc. I never did electrical though. To me
that is the hardest part of any automobile, the
electrical.
Yes, I do have a Bentley. Yes, I have checked
all of the fuses. No, I have not felt behind the dash
to see if it has come loose. Common sense tells me
that it has just gone out with age. Before it went
totally out, when you pulled the emergency flasher, it
did turn on the indicator lights on the dash. It just
would not "blink". I will check behind the dash on
Friday afternoon. I do not have anyway of checking if
any voltage is going through each of the parts. However, I do intend this Fasty to be my daily driver,
so it is not a bad idea to start replacing parts. Any
leads on good quality parts at a fair price would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading. John

This is a very good start, as it will save you money in the long run.

I don't think OE VW parts just quit with age, as they are very durable. More likely the connections are dirty and not allowing any current to flow thru them. On my 69 Square, I had to remove the fuses, and clean the ends of them along with cleaning the spade connections before my headlights would work. On my 71 Roadster, I had to do similar work just to get everything to function. A lot of times these problems happen from the car just sitting and not being driven (the worst thing you can do to a car).

Before it went totally out, when you pulled the emergency flasher, it did turn on the indicator lights on the dash. It just
would not "blink".

I can't really help on this, but maybe the wire that "feeds" them might have a bad connection (loose ground or positive side).

You should get one of those cheap voltmeters, as you'll need it for other items on the car. You don't need the expensive ones, as a cheap one will work fine here.

However, I do intend this Fasty to be my daily driver,
so it is not a bad idea to start replacing parts.

This sounds good, as I drive my 65 Notch whenever I can.

The best parts are already in your car, as todays aftermarket stuff has some quality issues. If you take some time and reall check everything over, you'll find the OE stuff is the best you can have in your car. I updated most of my 65 to 71 components, but that was because I already had them, and I was converting from 6 volt to 12 volt. Just something to think about.
