[T3] Insurance question

I need to find out how car insurance companies in CA view your policy if you
have been in an accident that wasn't your fault.

Last weekend, my poor Lucie ['69 Fastback] was hit by a BIG pickup truck
that damaged the passenger side of my car]:o

I am of the understanding that it goes on your record, that it is used to
determine your future rate, even if it isn't your fault.

In my case, I have had my license less than 3 years, have had my current
policy only 1 month. While my car was not in pristine condition at the time
of the accident, the estimates so far would be more than the current value
(i think). The passenger door needs to be replaced, and the right rear panel
needs work. Estimates are in the $1800+- range...

For other reasons, I do not want to go thru insurance.

Forgive me, but I have another ignorant question:
Doesn't the amount of damgae "total" the car? Would I have to give her up? I
am not willing to do that! She still runs fine, but would not win any beauty
contests.

I am hoping to work something out with the girl's family, but the Mother is
suspicious of my not wanting to go through insurance. While the obvious
insurance increase on their part is clear, they have indicated they will
prefer using this method instead of working something out.

I am looking for more facts to bolster my "no insurance" argument.

Any advice?

-Kathleen
