It sounds more like it might be 1 tooth off. It's pretty easy to turn the 
engine to TDC and then pull the dist out to look at the slot in the drive gear. 
Then you can see whether you're in the right place or not. Just compare to the 
drawing in your manual.

That is the best way to make a 30 deg BTDC mark for those with non stock 
distributors, who need some alternate way to set their timing.

I'd leave the T there. If you remove it, you will also have to remove another T 
under the gas tank. All this will leave your return line open to the air and it 
will rust. Left this way it does no harm and the car could still be returned to 
FI sometime in the future if you get tired of the carbs.

I wouldn't give up on the Solex carbs, but I don't recognize those numbers. 
Kits are still available for most models, but you may have some strange model 
on there. Exactly WHAT do you think is wrong with them? Moving to a new set of 
unknown carbs starts you up a whole new learning curve that is likely to be 
much longer than you expect.
