As you press down on the pedal the bell crank will turn, opening the carbs. At some point the carbs will be completely open and part of the bell crank will run into a stop that prevents the linkage from trying to open the carbs any more. At this point, the operating tab that actuates the kickdown switch should be approx. 1mm away from the kickdown switch lever. After this point, you can still advance the second part of the bell crank, but increased force is required to overcome the spring between the 2 bell crank halves. Note that beyond this point there is NO further opening of the carbs, but at some point the switch clicks closed and the kickdown solenoid in the AT is actuated. You can set all this up with the engine off but the ignition on (disconnect the points wire to prevent damage to the points and coil) and then you can hear the kickdown solenoid snap in if everything's working. Up to this point you didn't need to pay ANY attention to the accel cable adjustment, but eventually you should go to the driver's seat and press down from there to make sure that you have enough pedal travel to get to the kickdown position. I often find that I don't, which means that I need to tighten up the cable. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Shameless link for search engines: http://listarchive.type3.org ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
