BUT, before you do anything else get engine tin. Without it you're very likely headed for heat problems at idle or low speeds, since fan can't push air over cylinder fins. The type III car feeds cool air from the vents on the side of the body directly to the fan which pushes it over the fins. It's a closed forced-air system, not open like a motorcycle.

Having said that, I've had an external oil filter in the past (Oberg screen type, if I remember correctly) and while it worked fine was a lot of work and careful engineering to get it installed and not leak.

Is there a add on oil filter for the type 3 engine? I have a type 3 engine
on my Trike and no upper tin, I would like to add a filter to increase the
oil capacity, to effect better cooling. My engine sits out in the open,
because my Trike has no body. I have been unabl;e to find tin for a type 3.
