One reason for the > groove is to eliminate brake squeel (on our cars anyway). There are others > listed in Bentley, but that is the one true item I've found (grooved pads don't > squeel). The groove is actually to let water out, much like the sipes on a tire. It doesn't have anything to do with squeal, but only the better manufacturers bother with it, so I wouldn't be surprised if there seemed to be a correlation. The best pads have both the groove AND the damping material on the back of the backing plate. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Shameless link for search engines: http://listarchive.type3.org ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
