VW's have good resale value, American stuff is usually pretty bad... nobody wants a Chrysler ready to drop its tranney or a Ford that will soon need head gaskets. I really hate to have such distaste in American products but as soon as you think there getting better, your buddy has a 4.3L Chevy throw a rod right out of the blue! When was the last time a VW did that?
