I think one of Berg's catalogs mentions that he has run many, many VW distributors over the years and has yet to find one with a retarded #3. I think Bill Fisher mentions that non of the ones he checked seemed to have a retarded #3, either, but that he was told that some did. The gist of the story seems to be that everyone "knows" that there are lots of them out there, but no one has actually seen one. I REALLY DON'T KNOW, but this is really starting to sound like an urban legend. OTOH, it is hard to be exactly sure of what you're seeing on a distributor machine, so it might well be possible to simply overlook 3 degrees of retard.
