From what I can tell, it was a California thing for the aircooleds, but 50-state for the WBX Vanagons. But watch out with the WBX's; the post-'85 models with Digi*fant* (instead of Digi*jet*) injection don't have an advance mechanism in the distributor.

How many people do you know who have run an aftermarket electronic igition
for 20+ years? Another bonus is that many spare parts can be found on
jettas, golfs ect.

Another bonus is that if something *does* crap out, it's probably easier to get a Jetta/Rabbit/whatever part in Bumfark Nowhere than an aftermarket system. =)
