I usually use a ramp (the type they sell for the car to run up on) to jamb under
the tyre to stop the wheel rotating - the edge of the angle iron gets hooked in
the tread when the wheel is trying to turn and locks it there until turned the
other way.  Saves coming out from under each time.

You're right, it's a messy job, but someone has to do it.  ;-)
