There is gas left on the top side of the intake valves when you shut down. This 
will quickly evaporate from the hot head and condense where it is cool. The 
hose is a common place for this.  

Water is a combustion byproduct so there is always water vapor coming out of 
the crankcase breather. This will also condense in the hose. It will always 
smell/taste like gas, too. The only real check is to see if this stuff mixes 
with water or not.
