...Anyway, after putting something on it to slow the rust, I normally use some 3M brand

seam sealer. This can be bought at an auto body paint supply store or a very good FLAPS (or a well supplied Car Quest). I have several of them to choose from in my local area. Then you just load up your caulk gun with a tube of seam sealer and lay in a new bead in place...
