I had the same thing had happened '65 when I got it. The PO thought it
was a smart idea to cover up the cooling holes in the generator with
tape to make it look neater or something. It had burned all of the
field windings in the generator and also the oil pressure light wire
that was running underneath it so it must have got hot.
It also took out the regulator and generator light while it was at it,
so it must have shorted and gone to full output before it died, so you
might want to check both of those if yours has done something similar.
