Converting to carbs will be 10 times more expensive than getting the FI working. You have the wrong mechanic working on it... its the most simple straight forward EFI system out there, if he cant handle that then the last thing you want is him putting a carb setup on it. I will forward you the FI FAQ, its really easy to get a no-start FI working again and cheap... but make sure your problem isnt the ignition first, it often is. ONE trip in the salt and you might as well drive it for the rest of the winter! you'll never get all the salt out of the seams and rockers.... avoid salt at all cost! Ive still got salt in crevices in mine and it hasnt seen a winter since 92. $300 and you can have a ratty 'ol A2 VW which will run forever and cost nill to fix.
