Can't you just do it on the coil negative to bypass the contact breaker? It'll turn over but not start. No danger of problems from the wire being live at times. I don't think there's an issue with coil overheating as there's a built in ballast resistor, but you could add an extra resistance to limit the short-circuit current. I reckon car thieves might expect an old car to be hard to start anyway, and give up after a time! Dave.
