All I know is that my dad took care of his VW's very well (except valve adjustment - I guess he just didn't know about it) and my grandfather did nothing and never had a problem. I guess it is just dumb luck - like my sister driving 200 miles with the oil light on with no problem. If I would ever try to do this, I wouldn't get out of my driveway.
