The little brass wafers you filed off come in different versions. All you need
to do to change them is have a supply of replacement wafers and swap in the
correct ones. It's also nice to have a supply of replacement springs. You can
get all the parts you need from several other lock cylinders.

The wafers have to match the diameter of the lock cylinder and the depth of the
key cut. There are 4 different depths of key cuts in our cylinders and about 3
different lock cylinder diameters.

To do it right, you need to find a locksmith who has a supply of the correct VW
wafers. Then this becomes fairly simple for door handles. Getting to the wafers
in a rear door lock or an ignition cylinder is difficult, however.
