Yes, sorry I meant to say below that throttle plate. I did hook up a vacuum gauge when I was fiddling around with distributors after I first got the car. I found that if you were going at a constant speed, the vacuum was reasonably high, but if you opened the throttle, going up a hill etc, the vacuum would back off, and I presume this is where the mechanical advance would take over.
