At one point my engine was idling too high and I found out the throttle cable was pulling too hard. When I loosened it up so that the car would idle properly, I evidently loosened it up too much so that the kickdown switch doesn't work. It hasn't bothered me, so I haven't gotten around to re-adjusting it. However, the car does kickdown automatically still. If traffic slows down to like 20-25mph or so, then picks up, depending on how hard I mash the throttle, the transmission will kick down into 2nd. This, despite the fact that I am definitely not clicking the kickdown switch at all. So I'd gather your's should too. Also, the shift from 1st to 2nd is quite low, and in certain situations I've taken to manually shifting that myself. In "D" the engine revs quite high before shifting into 3rd if you keep on the throttle. If you lighten your foot on the throttle before the shift to 3rd, it usually kicks in around 40mph or so I think... Just going from memory...
