First, thanks you guys for helping me hash this out...just a means of

Note: This car has a single side draft carb, no clock...a blank insert, one
sunvisor, cloth seats, no chrome side body trim (accept for rocker), no hood
chrome. This was the simple variant...some have called it a 1500
N...although that designation appears nowhere on the car. Might this code
indicate that it was a simplified Variant with a 1600 engine?

What you're describing is a standard 1965 1500N. The "N" was VW's internal designation for the lower-spec version and wouldn't be seen anywhere on the car -- it would have just been badged "1500," or in the case of the Square, "Variant." The 1600 engine was introduced for the 1966 model year so your car couldn't have had one originally, but someone may have installed a later engine at some point. What's your engine number? That would tell you if the engine came with the car or not. Or maybe the fan shroud itself was replaced at some point with one from a newer car. After 40 years almost anything's possible.
