I worked for VW for over 25 years, and they never recommended camshaft
breakin. 
I now work for Mahle, (who makes probably 75% of the OEM valve trains)
and they don't recommend it.
I know of no OEM car manufacturer that recommends this. And they are
guaranteeing there engines now until 100K miles.
I think it is a problems with the aftermarket manufacturers of speed
equipment that started this "break in".
