Except for 72s, static timing works fine, but strobe timing is just a bit more 
precise. Plus you can watch lots of things happening, so the strobe is a great 
diagnostic device.

My guess is that you had the red lead clipped to the points side of the coil.

You should have one lead to ground and one to 12V. If you have trouble at the 
coil, you can try clipping to the D+ terminal on the generator.
