Re: [T3] Breaking in a rebuilt

hi jim
How do you break in a cam statically?
well youve just built your engine youve put it in the car carried out all
the basic settings The first time you start it you go right up to 2500rpm
and for the next 15-20 mins you hold your engine at between 2000-3000rpm,
alternating between the two speeds if at all possible .Do not let the rpm
drop .
The engine is now statically broken in! drop the oil reset the valves and
your all set to adjust your timeing properly per bently with a stobe light
and set your idle and such like.
i would then change my oil at the 100mile mark and then at 1000miles
setting valves each time stone cold in the mornings .
i totally agree with the vary the revs as you need to get the rings
seated .No matter on your oil preferences it is widely accepted that the
first 3000 or so miles need to be done with normal oil .Only after rings
have had time to seat can the change if you want to be made to synth oil .On
typ3 engines without a filter the merit of wich is open debate time .
i do beleive one of your favorite mods is the fitment of a proper filter
in wich case synth comes into its own.
i also agree that you should get the engine fairly early on into the max
rev range a few times all the loose metal needs to be" knocked off "now
while your doing all the oil changes.
the reason for cam breakin is to work harden the lifters and the cam
toghether as if you change the cam you should change the lifters and vise
versa. With metal quality not being what it used to be these days it is
important stuff and a flat cam or moshed lifters is not funny and the metal
debris floating around your oiling system that ensues will reek havoc. It has
been a very important process for typ4 engine users with the recent cam
lifter compatability problems.
