<x-flowed>Russ is probably correct re. the inconel wires. It would have to be 
something like that or nichrome to be both highly coorosion resistant 
and highly resistant.
There's only those few inches of wire to enough resistance span to 
operate the gauge.
Mine was cruded up with black tar which cleaned up OK but the little 
wipers on the float were shot!
Still shopping for a replacement.
