I think the change occurred in March '70. The D brain is the better part, and 
it can be subbed for the C if you also change the temp switch. You probably 
don't even have to do that if you live in a warm climate where the cold start 
valve is never used.  

The D was used for the last half of '70 as well as all of '71.  

'72 and '73 both used Es, but there were actually two different versions of Es, 
with different Bosch part numbers. Presumably the later one is better.  

'68 came out with the A brain which was Bosch's first attempt. They changed to 
a B sometime after that, I think still within the '68 model year. The B 
continued in use in '69. The A brain is different in internal construction and 
Bosch even stopped accepting them as exchange cores about 20 years ago.
