In many discussions on the list I think we've confirmed that a 1964-65 1500S with lowered compression is option M249, not M240. There has been a lot of confusion about this since after 1965 the option code M249 was reused to indicate the automatic transmission option (and VW's documentation is somewhat vague), but there's plenty of evidence to support it, including the car in my garage.


In any case, I think James said his car has a single carb. James, is your case original to the car? Does the engine number have a letter N or R stamped near it on the case? That would give us another clue.
