I suspect it is just Bernoulli's effect over the open window. Opening the vent window should be even more effective. OTOH, a lot of engines will put out much more smelly exhaust under decel, which would make this much more noticable. I never thought of these vents in the 71-3 squares as a possible source of exhaust getting in, but that certainly seems possible. The only problem I have with this theory is that I've had a lot of these cars and few of them have ever demonstarted the problem. The ones that did were all cured by fixing the lower heat exchanger to muffler connections. OTOH, it's also possible that my cars all did this, but my engines just weren't smelly enough for me to notice it. I've also been told that I have a poor sense of smell, but I'm not so sure about that. > Of course, anyone that was at Parma knows how DARK Keith's > Square really is, so it could be something unique to his car due an > undisclosed force-air induction modification or some such thing. 8^) It's probably something about that extra sump on the bottom that stirs up the airflow. I just remember following Keith down the highway into a sunset so you could see the underside of his engine silouetted against the bright pavement. It looked just like he had bolted a hubcap face down onto the bottom of his engine. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
