Run your hands around the joints between the lower heat exchangers and the 
muffler. I'll bet that you can find a bit of leakage there. Under the right 
conditions this can blow forward and get INTO the heat exchanger jacket, then 
if your heater valve is slightly open some of it will get into the car.

This is a very common problem, but it may not be yours.
