It backfired through the carb once while I was fiddling with the accelerator pump, and while I was leaning over the engine- my ears are still ringing this morning! ;-) I could hear that it was through the carb as I was coming up the driveway. > If it is indeed backfiring, this sounds like a gross timing problem. Yes I double checked that, when I changed out the 009 for the vacuum only dist. > As for your Type 2 cruising speed, there are many factors that could be > blocking performance: compression loss (cracked or loose head, rings), spark > loss (leaky wires, plug-jumping, loose coil feed connection), exhaust > obstruction, fuel obstruction (cruddy main jet, low pump pressure), etc. If > you're losing oil I think that compression test might prove instructive. > Start there. I have changed the SP wires, good spare Bosch 6V coil that I had and I have put a new terminal on the 15 wire as the old one was nearly falling off. It has had a new pump put in it, and I checked the main jet. How would you check for an exhaust obstruction? Hopefully I will get time to do a compression test today.
