Hi Toby, I don't remember the exact decision before, but I think we've made a couple of reasonable suggestions. PTFE (teflon) is the best for self lubricating properties (it has the lowest coeff of friction) BUT it is soft and will embed dirt and act like sandpaper -as will all plastics to some extent. The best machining plastic I know other than the phenolics is Acetal copolymer (or is it homopolymer)(trade name Delrin) It is hard and tough and less likely to embedd dirt, but it can be quite brittle in thin sections. In between Teflon and Delrin there are a vast array of different nylons and others, some with added lubricant (moly) that would probably do. They all of course vary in price with Teflon up there near the top. If you want to know more, check out this website: RSWWW.COM and navigate to mechanical/engineering materials and have a look for yourself- they have specs for lots of different (but not all) engineering plastics. Personally I think I would look at Delrin as its an excellent gen purpose plastic. I'm not in the market for sliders myself as I have a '73 but if someone has an improvement over the stock short sliders there, I'd be interested- they allow a lot of rock and vibration.
