Hedge=> I really need a good lengthy checklist * Get a decent manual and study up all procedures before you touch it. The Muir book is good for beginners, but keep in touch with the list for the fine points. * Get a couple of squirt bottles of Liquid Wrench and assemble a basic tool kit. * Do the brakes first. Always be sure you can stop before you move. * Take off the wheels and visually inspect the brake system. Clean as necessary. Some stuff will be hard to take apart. Do it anyway. * Open the bleed valves (carefully!) and change the brake fluid. This process will point out leaks and stopped-up lines. Replace or repair as necessary. Bleed the lines. * Clean the engine compartment well enough to see what you're doing. If there's a nest, wear a mask. Be careful about disturbing wires and connectors, they can be brittle. Learn what's going on in there. * Pull the plugs and squirt some engine oil in each cylinder. How do the plugs look? * Turn the engine over, plugs out. First try it by hand, if that doesn't work try a small pry bar on the pulley, not the starter. You want to lube the rings and cylinder walls, so take it easy. If it won't turn over by hand, you'll probably want to pull the engine right away and check it out carefully to see whether it can be saved. * If it turns over by hand, change the oil and clean the screen. Buy enough oil for two changes. * Replace all fuel lines, seriously. Don't forget the one under the tank. * In the process, drain the tank. If you're lucky it'll be pretty near full of fuel that smells awful. If there's nothing or if you get sludge/gook/rust, save yourself a lot of hassle and pull the tank for cleaning/derusting. * New fuel filter. * When you hook up the new battery, watch carefully for sparks. This indicates an open circuit somewhere, and you'll need to go over the electrical system. * Key on, check that both the red and green warning lights come on. If not, fix those before you start up. * Open and clean the air intake system. New filter or fresh oil. That'll should get you started.
