> I'd really hate to see someone cut out perfectly good sheet metal In many cases it's not perfectly good sheet metal - before rust is visible on the 'bulge' it has got between the edge of the tray and the bulge, and any spill over the tray - eg when parked at an angle forwards and to the left (more likely with RHD) - can track down through the rusty layer between the bulge and the hidden rubber seal. It's not a well-painted area, and repairing the rusty flange on the tray that stops water pouring down into the air-box needs removal of most of the top. Then repair is reasonably straightforward; anything less is likely to be temporary to a greater or lesser extent. Dave.
