I always assumed that VW used the same shifters in both type 1 & 3 in the same years and that the only change was in 70 or 71 when they went to a shorter throw (less mechanical advantage.) Was the 59 beetle really different from the 61-69 type 3? I guess it's a pretty universal human response to posit that the fault must lie with the "other" guy. I know I see it in myself, but only in retrospect, when I've had a chance to calm down.
