If the muffler is scrap, it can be helpful to know that the nut is 46mm, the same as the bus hub (from 68?), so you can use (or maybe borrow) that socket with a good bar once you've cut through the pipes. You'll still need heat and a bit of luck that the thread isn't too far gone to re-use. The gasket is a copper ring originally with asbestos filling; don't know what they use as filling now. BTW Mark, were the Golf pads overall the exact same thickness as new late Type 3 ones, including any backing? Dave.
