i am thinking that the loose bolts this guy is referring to are the small bolts that hold the sump plate on. I have had this happen to me, and seen it on other VW's. I think the way these bolts are installed is with a bit of loc-tite or something. sometimes, this fails and every time you take the acorn type nut off, you take the stud out as well. you can get new studs-but they will do the same thing-i don't know how to get the stud to stick in there...unless you could get all the oil completely out of the stud whole-then a dab of loctite, then a new stud. -kevin somerville, ma '65 kombi '71 sqbk -----Original Message----- From: Gary Gamboa [mailto:gary_gamboa@hotmail.com] Sent: Sunday, June 22, 2003 12:06 PM To: type3@vwtype3.org Subject: [T3] Oil leak Hello, I was driving from Cape Cod to Quincy, MA, about 70 miles. When I got about 30 miles into the trip, I stopped and noticed smoke coming from under the right side and through the right vent. When I looked under the car, the smoke seemed to come from the lower HE. There was also about 10-20 oil drops on the ground. This oil smoking has happened twice so far, between these 2 occurences, I have made numerous short trips with no oil smoking. Why didn't this happen on those small trips? I had just changed the oil, and the guy who did it mentioned that 2 of the oil housing bolts were moving freely. He also mentioned there was a kit to replace these bolts cuase they frequently do this. Does anyone know of this kit?
