Not only that, but they were also schwing-axles.... And they had 6 pr tires, camber compensator bar, probably stiffer shocks etc.. My owner's manual calls it a "Variant II" where mine is a "Variant I", the regular model. Not to be confused with the VW that actually was named Variant II on the South American market, of course.
