The 944/924 was basically a heinz 57 car designed by Porsche from the VW/AUDI parts bin as a 'sporty' car for Audi. When Audi changed their minds Porsche decided to sell it as their own (even though the 924 was built at the audi factory i believe).
It was very fortunate for Porsche that they did sell the car as their own as it kept porsche out of bankruptcy - a point that the 911 purists hate being reminded of.
