For the later bonnet/front hood, first make sure the spring is sitting in the
notch at the back of the hinge, not through either of the holes.

Then get another helper to help your husband pull hard on a strong rope hooked
round the spring hook.  You hold the hook with a pair of locking grips, and slip
it over the appropriate notch when tension is on.  I think mine is on the first
one anyway, so I suspect you have (wrongly) put the other end through a hole.
That's how a club member (a VW garage owner) helped me do it on the Fastback
some years ago.

I managed it single-handed with one of those 6-part pulley systems with the
other end anchored to the camper seat-belt mounting (about the right height),
but it does take quite a force, so don't go anchoring it to the drainpipe!
